Swiss game 'needs regional rivalry'



GENEVA, Feb 19 (Reuters) - Financially-hit Swiss soccer could be revived if the country's 10 regions all had a club in the first division, FC Sion's president said on Thursday.

'It's the only way to make the sport popular again', Christian Constantin told a news conference in Martigny as he prepared to present his idea to the Swiss Football League's special 'Task Force' of clubs and the Swiss FA on Friday.

Constantin wants to revolutionise the Swiss game to make clubs financially stronger, improve the quality of the league and make it attractive for potential sponsors.

Under his proposal a team from each region - Aargau/Basel, Bernese Oberland, Central Switzerland, Eastern Switzerland, Jura, Graubuenden, Swiss Mittelland, Ticino, Valais and Vaud - would be represented in the top flight to boost attendances.

Swiss soccer is close to a full-blown crisis with Servette and Wil fighting crippling debts and other clubs struggling to make ends meet. Lausanne-Sports, once owned by Constantin, and FC Lugano went bankrupt last year and the clubs were dissolved.

Constantin wants clubs to receive a share of the funds from Sport-Toto, Toto-X und Sporttip, who represent different lotteries within Switzerland. 'We have offered our name for free to these lotteries. This can't continue', he said.

Constantin is also proposing a new League Cup competition in which the winner gets a UEFA Cup place and says Switzerland should be given another European qualifying spot by neighbours Liechtenstein because their team Vaduz play in the Swiss league.

'Because Vaduz are currently playing in our league, we should be awarded Liechtenstein's UEFA Cup spot,' he said.

Constantin, who rescued former champions FC Sion from extinction last year and fought in the courts for a place in the second division, has secured a two-year sponsorship deal that he hopes will help the club bounce back to the top flight.

'We have the money and the players to revive our glorious past', he said. Sion are 13th in the second division.

1) On est loin d'un FC Romandie ou même d'un Olympique des Alpes remplaçant les clubs de Vaud/Valais/Fribourg.
2) Je suppose que les noms des 10 régions est une invention du journaliste. Je n'aurais pas découpé la Suisse footballistique ainsi.

C'est quoi espn news et est-ce que CC parle anglais, j'imagine que ça a été traduit.

ESPN est le principal réseau de chaînes sportives américain (sur le cable). J'imagine que la news est tirée de leur site web.

c'est vrai que l'article comporte des erreurs (cf lausanne...) mais c'était juste pour noter que l'info avait fait "le tour du monde"

ce qui est marrant c'est que la dépêche d'agence a plus de paragraphes en anglais que celle qu'on a pu avoir en français même si les ajouts ne sont pas forcement corrects, on peut noter le zèle du journaliste...

Je pense qu'on peut encore attendre un peu avant que des sponsors américains s'intéressent à nous.
